    Multiple Sclerosis Care at Home

Multiple sclerosis affects people very differently, and it changes over time. Reedsfield Care provides personal and practical support at home for adults living with MS, built around what the person can do rather than what they cannot, and adjusted as symptoms relapse and settle. Clinical management stays with the neurologist and MS nurse.

    Fatigue and pacing the day

Fatigue in MS is not ordinary tiredness and it does not respond to willpower. Care is planned around the times of day when energy is best, so that the effort goes into the things the person actually wants to do rather than into getting washed and dressed.

Carers take on the tasks that drain the day: cooking, laundry, shopping, cleaning, so more of the good hours are left over.

    Mobility, transfers and equipment

Carers support safe transfers, use of a frame, wheelchair or hoist where one is in place, and moving around the home. Equipment is used as specified by the occupational therapist or physiotherapist, and carers are trained on it before they work alone.

    • Safe transfers and support with walking aids
    • Support with prescribed exercises between therapy sessions
    • Positioning, comfort and skin care
    • Falls awareness and a walk through of the home

    Continence, dignity and personal care

Bladder and bowel problems are common in MS and are the part people find hardest to ask about. Carers provide continence support discreetly and without fuss, following the plan agreed with the continence service, and support catheter care where district nurses have set it up.

    Relapses and changing needs

A relapse can change what someone needs within days. Care can be increased quickly and then reduced again as things recover, without changing provider or renegotiating a contract. Where MS is progressive and support is needed throughout the day and night, live-in care keeps the person at home with one consistent carer.

    Frequently asked questions

Do you support younger adults with MS?

Yes. MS is often diagnosed in people in their thirties and forties, and care is planned around work, family and independence rather than around age.

    Can carers use a hoist?

Yes, where a hoist has been provided and the carer has been trained on that equipment and the moving and handling plan.

Can care increase during a relapse?

Yes, and it often does. We can usually add visits quickly and reduce them again afterwards.

Do you work with the MS nurse?

Yes. We liaise with the MS nurse, GP, district nurses and therapists, and report changes we notice.

    Is live-in care an option?

Yes, from £1,150 a week, with relief cover for the carer's breaks included.
