They follow the routine your relative already has. Mornings usually mean help to get up, wash, dress and take medication. Through the day they cook, shop, do the laundry, keep the house tidy, support mobility around the home and go along to appointments or out for a walk. Evenings are quieter, and overnight they sleep in the house and are there if help is needed.
The carer needs their own bedroom in the house with somewhere to keep their things, plus bathroom access, use of the kitchen and wifi. The room does not need to be large or newly decorated. Food is shared from the household shop.
Live-in carers work in rotations, typically two to four weeks on followed by a break. A named relief carer covers the break, so your relative gets to know two people rather than a stream of new faces. Relief cover is included in the weekly fee. Each day the carer also takes around two hours of break, usually while your relative is resting.
For one person, live-in care and a mid range care home are usually broadly comparable. Our live-in fees start at £1,150 a week for one person with standard support. For a couple, live-in is normally much cheaper, because one carer supports both partners rather than paying for two residential places.
We visit at home first, free of charge, and talk about the person as well as the tasks: what they did for a living, whether the house is quiet or busy, pets, food, faith, whether they would prefer someone chatty or someone calm. We then propose a carer and you meet them before anything is agreed.
Tell your care manager and we change the carer, at no charge. It is usually about personality rather than competence and it is much better raised early. If you want to stop live-in care altogether, notice is one week. There is no minimum contract.
No. The carer sleeps in the house and is there if your relative needs help in the night. If someone needs regular help through the night, that is a waking night arrangement and we quote for it separately rather than expect one carer to cover it.
