Overnight Care at Home: Sleeping vs Waking Nights

Nights are where most home care arrangements break down first. This page explains the three overnight options in plain terms, what each one is actually for, and how to work out which your household needs.

    Sleeping night

A carer stays in the home overnight, sleeps in a provided bed, and is available to get up if needed — typically for a bathroom trip, reassurance, or repositioning. It suits households where disturbance is occasional rather than constant.

    • Carer sleeps but is on hand for occasional wakes
    • Needs a bed and a private space
    • Usually the lowest-cost overnight option

    Waking night

The carer stays awake and works through the night. This is the right choice where someone is up repeatedly, needs regular repositioning to protect skin, is at real risk of leaving the house, or has needs that cannot wait for someone to wake up.

    • Carer awake and active for the whole shift
    • Suits frequent wakes, repositioning, catheter or continence needs
    • Appropriate where night-time wandering is a genuine risk

    Live-in care as the alternative

If you need both daytime and night-time support, a live-in carer is often better value than stacking day visits and separate night cover. Live-in includes a normal night's presence in the home; consistently disturbed nights are usually covered by adding a night carer alongside, so the live-in carer still gets legal rest.

Live-in care starts from £1,150 per week; night rates are quoted per assessment because they depend on how disturbed the nights genuinely are.

How to choose: a two-week night diary

Before committing to a waking night, keep a simple diary for two weeks: what time each wake happened, what was needed, and how long it took. Most families discover either that the nights are calmer than they felt, or that they are far worse — and either way the diary turns a guess into a decision.

    Frequently asked questions

What's the difference in cost between sleeping and waking nights?

A waking night costs more because the carer is working the whole shift rather than sleeping. Both are quoted per assessment — call 01784 740078 for a written rate.

Does a sleeping-night carer need their own room?

They need a bed and a private, safe space to rest. Where that isn't possible, a waking night or a different arrangement is usually the answer.

    Can overnight care start quickly?

It depends entirely on carer availability in your area. We won't promise a start date we can't staff — call and we'll tell you what is realistic.

    Is overnight care available short-term?

Yes — after a hospital discharge, during a period of illness, or as respite for a family carer who is not sleeping.

Do you cover nights across all your areas?

Night cover is offered across our core towns subject to carer availability. See areas we cover.
