How to Choose a Home Care Agency: Questions That Matter

Most home care agencies sound identical on their websites. The differences show up in continuity, out-of-hours cover and contract terms — none of which appear in a brochure. These are the questions worth asking.

Start with the CQC report, not the rating

Every regulated provider in England is inspected by the Care Quality Commission. Read the report itself, check when it was published, and look at what inspectors said about staffing and management rather than only the overall word. Our full report is published on our CQC report page.

    Ask about continuity, specifically

'We try to send the same carer' means nothing. Ask how many different carers a typical client sees in a month, what happens when the regular carer is on holiday, and whether you are told in advance about changes.

    • How many carers will realistically attend in a month?
    • Who covers holidays and sickness?
    • Will we be told in advance about a change?
    • Is there an introduction visit before care starts?

    Test the out-of-hours reality

Ring the out-of-hours number before you sign anything and see who answers. An agency where evenings and weekends go to an answering service is a very different proposition at 9pm on a Sunday. Ours is 07403 862037.

    Read the commercial terms

This is where costs hide. Ask directly about each of the following and get the answer in writing.

    • Setup or registration fees — we charge none
    • Minimum contract length — we have none
    • Notice period to reduce or stop — one week with us
    • Weekend and Bank Holiday rates
    • Travel or mileage charges
    • How and when the rate can be increased

Check they genuinely cover your postcode

Plenty of agencies list wide coverage and then struggle to staff the edges of it, which shows up as late or missed calls. Ask whether they have carers already working on your street or in your town. Reedsfield's core coverage is deliberately tight — Egham, Virginia Water, Ashford, Sunbury, Shepperton and Staines — so travel time never eats into visits.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is a bigger agency safer?

Not automatically. Size helps with cover; small local teams usually win on continuity and travel time. Judge the specifics rather than the scale.

Should I use an introductory agency instead?

Introductory agencies match you to a self-employed carer, which is cheaper but makes you responsible for cover, vetting and oversight. A CQC-registered provider carries that responsibility instead.

What should I ask for in writing?

The care plan, the itemised rate including weekends, the notice period, and the complaints process.

    How do I check a carer's credentials?

Ask whether every carer is DBS-checked, referenced, inducted and supervised. Ours are, and supervision sits with a qualified care manager.

    What if it isn't working?

Say so early. A good provider changes the carer or the plan; with us there is no minimum contract, so you are never locked in.
